Making plans for 2013

From March 2013 I'll be living up in Rostock on the North German Plain so will focus on classic European Mountain Races for the summer. I've made tentative plans til August, but these are liable to change as I find out about other races. But at the moment I'll target the following races, interspersed with local smaller races in North Germany.

31st March: Anglo Celtic Plate (100km). 40 laps of a 2.5 km tarmac path circuit in Perth, Scotland.  Competing for Wales in the annual 100k home countries international.

28th April: Zittauer Gebirgslauf (35 km, 800m ascent). Mountain race through the Zittau Mountains on the German Czech border, one of the old East Germany classics.

12th May: Prague Marathon. Attempt at a Marathon PB. Not too long a journey, fast flat marathon.

25th May: GutsMuths Rennsteiglauf (77km). Germany's largest trail race with a 77km ultra-distance trail run through the Thüringer Wald (Thuringian Forest), a wooded hill range in Central Germany, along the Rennsteig, Germany's most popular long distance hiking path.

17th June: Carnia Sky race (25km, 2000m ascent). The Skyrace Carnia runs through the Carnic Alps in the north-east of Italy. The route runs up to Monte Floritz (2184m), down to the Austrian border crossing on the mountain pass (1360m), up again to the peak of Pal Piccolo (1800m), and then downhill to the finish. One of the highlights on the course is running through the World War One trenches and fortifications on Pal Piccolo, which have been restored as an open-air museum.

29th June: Brixen Marathon (42 km, 2400m ascent). Uphill trail marathon in the Brixen Dolomites.

7th July: Zugspitze extrem berglauf (17.5 km, 2300m ascent). Mountain race up Germany's highest mountain the Zugspitze, some slight down hill but a classic up hill race.

21st July: Grossglockner Berglauf (12.7 km, 1500m ascent). Another class up hill race up Austria's Grossglockner Berglauf.

3rd August: Marathon Karkonowski. 2013 World Long Distance Mountain Running Trophy race, dependant on entry or international selection.. fast runnable trail marathon in the Krkonose mountains on the Czech Polish border.

11th August: Sierre Zinal (31 km, 2200m ascent). One of the classics of world mountain running in Switzerland.

14th September (not confirmed): Sentiero delle Grigne. (43km, 3200m ascent). Stats say it all, classic sky race in NW Italy, in the Lombardia Mountains.

12th October. Brocken Marathon. Classic Mountain race in the Harz Mountains, home of the Brocken Spectre and the closest mountainous region to Rostock.
